8 steps to quality custom paint

step 1: prep
• Wash thoroughly with a mild detergent and hot water.
• Rinse well and dry with a clean dry cloth.
• Solvent clean with Wax and Grease remover.
• Wipe dry with a clean dry cloth.

step 2: body repAir
• Grind or sandblast repair area to remove paint and all rust as needed.
• Pull or Fill dents as needed using an appropriate body filler.
• Sand repair area and featheredge using 80, 180, 220, and finish with 320 grit sandpaper on a random orbital sander.

step 3: PRIMER SURFACER
• For bare metal areas larger than one square foot,
apply an etch primer.
• Apply high build Primer surfacer to entire piece
• Block sand with 400–600 grit.

step 4: primer sealer
• Apply 2–3 medium coats, allowing each coat
to flash handslick between coats, to achieve 2.0 mils. Apply to complete panels only.
• Allow to dry 12 hours @ 70°F. Then scuff sand with
600 grit or finer prior to topcoating.

step 5: Color
• Stir thoroughly and strain.
• Blow off car with air, lightly clean with tack rag.
• Apply 2–3 medium wet coats or until hiding is achieveD

This is not how I paint bikes, upside down with no paint in the airbrush...also, I'm way hotter.

step 6: Art And Graphics
• Apply 2 medium wet coats of clear to protect base coat against masks, tape and handling.
• Force dry or air dry for 24 hours.
• Apply custom art and graphics.

Step 7: Final clear
• Apply two coats allowing 2–5 minutes flash time
between coats.
• Force dry or air dry for 24 hours.
• Wet sand with 600 grit to eliminate orange peel
• re-clear

step 8: Final polish
• wet sand stepping down from 2000 to 3000 or finer sand paper
• Buff by machine using a microfinishing rubbing compound and a fine machine polish.
